The Nevada Commission on Judicial Selection held an emergency meeting on May 17, 2024, to discuss the sole applicant for the vacancy in Department 14 of the 8th Judicial District Court. The Commission decided to conduct a background investigation and, upon receiving a satisfactory report, forwarded the name of Ms. Tina Talim, Esq., to Governor Lombardo on June 3, 2024. Governor Lombardo has thirty days from receipt to appoint a candidate.
The vacancy arose following Judge Adriana Escobar's retirement. Eligible candidates were required to be at least 25 years old, with ten years of legal experience and two years of practice and residency in Nevada.
Governor Lombardo must make his selection by July 3, 2024. To complete the term fully, the appointed judge must run as a candidate in the November 2024 general election. All district court judges' current terms in Nevada will expire on January 4, 2027.
The Nevada Commission on Judicial Selection consists of seven permanent members and two temporary members for each selection process. These include the Supreme Court Chief Justice, three non-attorneys appointed by the Governor, and three attorneys appointed by the State Bar of Nevada. Appointments are subject to political party restrictions and geographic diversity requirements.
