Attorney General Letitia James and Governor Kathy Hochul have reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the fundamental freedoms of New Yorkers as President-Elect Donald Trump prepares for his second term. The two officials announced a reinforced partnership, including new dedicated staff, to address potential federal legal threats to reproductive freedom, gun safety laws, and other critical issues.
Governor Hochul has launched the Empire State Freedom Initiative, which convened before Election Day and has begun developing comprehensive plans to counter policy and regulatory threats that may arise from a Trump Administration. She emphasized steps already taken by New York to safeguard access to safe and legal abortions, highlighting the recent passage of Proposition 1 which enshrines reproductive freedoms in the State Constitution.
"As Attorney General, I will always stand up to protect New Yorkers and fight for our rights and values," said Attorney General James. "My office has been preparing for a potential second Trump Administration... We are ready to fight back again."
Governor Hochul stated, "The safety and wellbeing of New Yorkers are my top priorities... My administration will also be prepared to protect New Yorkers’ fundamental freedoms from any potential threats."
During Trump's first term, New York engaged in affirmative and defensive litigation against federal actions impacting its residents. To prepare for future challenges, senior officials from both offices will coordinate legal strategies regularly.
The Empire State Freedom Initiative is focused on safeguarding areas such as reproductive rights, civil rights, immigration, gun safety, and environmental issues under a Trump Administration. This task force includes representatives from various state agencies tasked with devising proactive measures through legislation and partnerships.
Proposition 1's approval follows efforts by Governor Hochul and Attorney General James ensuring its inclusion on the ballot. The measure further strengthens protections around reproductive health services within the state.
In addition to advancing climate goals as Co-Chair of the U.S. Climate Alliance, Governor Hochul remains committed to reducing illegal guns through the Interstate Task Force on Illegal Guns initiative established in 2022. This initiative has seized over 28,527 illegal firearms thus far.
