The Iowa Supreme Court is scheduled to hear oral arguments in Marshalltown on November 19. The session will be held at the Marshalltown Performing Arts Center, located at Marshalltown High School, and will commence at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
The case under review is State of Iowa v. Artell Young, case number 23-0480 from Polk County District Court. This case questions whether Artell Young's rights were violated under the Iowa Constitution when federal probation officers conducted a warrantless search of his residence. Young was convicted by a jury for drug possession while on federal probation. He argues that evidence obtained during the search should have been suppressed by the trial judge. Although federal authorities opted not to prosecute, they handed over the evidence to state authorities, leading to the current criminal proceedings.

Following the oral arguments, there will be a public reception with supreme court justices, sponsored by the Marshall County Bar Association.
