The Justice Department’s Antitrust Division and the Federal Trade Commission recently took part in the G7 Competition Authorities and Policymakers Summit held in Rome. The summit aimed to address how competition can be maintained within AI-related technologies, products, and applications.

Organized under the G7 Industry, Technology, and Digital Ministerial Declaration, the event was hosted by Italy's Italian Competition Authority (Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato). The U.S. delegation was led by Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Doha Mekki.

"Sharing the United States’ experiences and perspectives and reflecting on best practices alongside international enforcers helps us better apply the U.S. antitrust laws to unlock economic opportunity for the American people," stated Mekki. "We thank Italy for organizing an exceptional G7 summit and for driving a timely conversation on promoting competition in AI."

The summit concluded with a communiqué from G7 competition authorities and policymakers highlighting potential concerns about competition in AI-related markets. It identified guiding principles to ensure healthy competition within these areas. The communiqué stressed that authorities need to remain vigilant against concentrated market power, possible collusion, or improper information sharing facilitated by AI technologies. A commitment was made by G7 members to protect open and fair competition in digital markets and AI, ensuring that its benefits are accessible across societies.
