Attorney General Merrick B. Garland delivered remarks at the Justice Department’s September 11 Remembrance Ceremony on September 11, 2024.
"Good morning," Garland began, addressing those gathered to mark the 23rd anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. He requested a moment of silence to honor those lost on that day.
"September 11 is an enduring tragedy for this country," Garland stated. He acknowledged the lasting impact on those who lost friends and family members in the attacks and from related illnesses in subsequent years. He also recognized survivors who continue to bear the traumas and scars of that day.
Garland paid tribute to law enforcement officers, agents, firefighters, emergency medical personnel, military personnel, and many ordinary citizens who displayed extraordinary courage during the events of September 11.
"Today, we hold particularly close in our hearts the loved ones of the Justice Department employees who risked and lost their lives on 9/11 and from 9/11-related illnesses since then," he said. He honored colleagues who responded courageously to the attacks and have continued their service at the Justice Department.
"It is an honor to work with you," Garland remarked.
The Attorney General emphasized that the Department joins Americans nationwide in remembering and reflecting on the tragedy of September 11. "We renew our commitment to doing everything in our power to keep our country safe from the threat of terrorism, and to uphold the rule of law that is the foundation of our democracy," he stated.
Garland concluded by rededicating efforts to honor those lost and their families through continued work at the Justice Department.
"Thank you."
