The Burleigh County State’s Attorney’s Office in Bismarck, ND, has announced an opening for the position of Assistant State’s Attorney II. This full-time, exempt role offers a salary range of $90,126.40 to $100,006.40 annually, depending on experience.

The Burleigh County State’s Attorney’s Office is responsible for handling felony, misdemeanor, infraction and traffic cases as well as juvenile court matters and mental health hearings. The office also provides legal advice to county officials and serves as the chief prosecuting body for the county.

Under the supervision of the State’s Attorney, responsibilities include gathering evidence, conducting criminal and civil lawsuits including trials and appeals, advising law enforcement officers, preparing warrants, holding probable cause hearings, reviewing police reports for prosecution purposes, drafting legal documents such as pleadings and motions, conducting legal research and maintaining working relationships with judiciary members and other attorneys.

Candidates must possess a Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school and be licensed to practice law in North Dakota. A minimum of two years’ experience practicing criminal law is required along with a valid driver’s license. Candidates will undergo a standard post-offer background check. Proficiency in word processing software and legal research tools like Westlaw is necessary.

If no candidates meet these requirements, the position may be underfilled with an Assistant State's Attorney I at a salary range of $81,723.20 to $90,708.80 annually. For this underfill role no prior experience is required but candidates must have or expect to obtain their Juris Doctorate by July 2024 Bar Exam.
