Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser issued a statement on August 12, 2024, following the guilty verdict in the trial of Tina Peters. The case concluded with a Mesa County jury finding Peters guilty on multiple charges related to election tampering.
Weiser emphasized the importance of voting rights in his statement: “The freedom to vote is sacred in America. Many fought for—and even died for—establishing voting as a fundamental constitutional right. And it’s a right we continue to protect today.” He highlighted that democratic governance relies on the integrity of elections and the trust placed in election officials to ensure fair processes.
Peters was found guilty on three counts of attempting to influence a public official, along with one count each of conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation, first-degree official misconduct, violation of duty, and failure to comply with secretary of state requirements. Weiser stated, “Tina Peters violated that trust with her fellow Coloradans... Today, she was held accountable for her criminal acts.”
Weiser also acknowledged the efforts of the prosecutors who worked alongside Mesa County District Attorney Dan Rubinstein: “They have worked for several years under difficult circumstances—including abhorrent threats. I am grateful for their commitment to the rule of law and sense of duty.”
Concluding his statement, Weiser warned against future attempts at election tampering: “Today’s verdict is a warning to others that they will face serious consequences if they attempt to illegally tamper with our voting processes or election systems.” He reassured the public about the security and fairness of Colorado's elections, describing them as "the gold standard of the nation."
