Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco delivered remarks at the DOJ Pride 30th Anniversary Celebration and Awards Ceremony on June 17, 2024. Her speech highlighted the significant contributions of DOJ Pride members over the past three decades.

Monaco expressed gratitude to David for his introduction and acknowledged the efforts of both current and former Department employees who constitute DOJ Pride. She particularly thanked the founding members, noting that their early efforts have paved the way for today's gathering. "Your footprints then have led the way to today," she stated.

She emphasized that DOJ Pride has grown stronger over the years, reflecting both pride in being part of the LGBTQ+ community and a commitment to the Department and country. Monaco acknowledged that founding members faced challenges with a government that historically failed to support LGBTQ+ Americans but praised their perseverance. "DOJ Pride did not give up," she remarked.

Monaco credited DOJ Pride with improving workplace conditions within the Department and enhancing its advocacy for public service. The organization played a crucial role in enforcing sexual orientation non-discrimination policies and actively recruiting LGBTQ+ attorneys. Additionally, it honors the legacies of James R. Douglass and Gerald B. Roemer, two employees who continued their service while battling HIV/AIDS.

She concluded by emphasizing that DOJ Pride's actions ensure that the Department adheres to its values, which are essential for advancing its mission to uphold the rule of law, maintain national safety, and protect civil rights. "You are vital to your teams, to your components, and to this Department," Monaco said.

Expressing her honor and pride in working alongside DOJ Pride members, Monaco pledged continued support for the community. She congratulated them on three decades of achievements and looked forward to many more years of progress.

"Congratulations on three decades of DOJ Pride. Here’s to the next 30 years and long after," she concluded.
