TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Legal Newsline) — A subcontractor who allegedly suffered severe burns from a 480-watt electrical shock while working at Florida State University is claiming the school' negligence.

Malik Henry filed a complaint Aug. 10 in Leon County Circuit Court against Eaton Corporation, Florida State University Board of Trustees, Universal Electric of Tallahassee and others alleging negligence and other claims.

Henry, according to his complaint, was working as a third-party temporary subcontractor for Universal Electric of Tallahassee on the Florida State University's premises on Aug. 11, 2021. He claims he suffered a "catastrophic flash incident" after coming into contact with an electrical system.

Henry further claims a 480-watt shock of electricity caused burns to his hands and blew him out of his shoes. According to Henry's complaint, he was then life-flighted to Shands Hospital Burn Unit in Gainesville, where he underwent treatment for electrical burns, including multiple skin grafts.

He alleges Florida State University's negligence for failing to maintain its property in a safe condition and failing to correct the dangerous condition. He also alleges Florida State's negligence in hiring the architects and engineers for their design, construction and inspection of the building.

Henry seeks monetary relief of more than $50,000, interest, trial by jury and all other just relief. He is represented by Jami Coleman of Coleman Law PA in Tallahassee.
