Cozen O’Connor announced Vanessa C. Hew, widely recognized as one of the country’s leading corporate IP litigators, has joined its award-winning Intellectual Property Practice in New York. Hew — who joins as a member and comes to the firm from Duane Morris — will join forces with fellow intellectual property litigator Gregory P. Gulia, who left Duane Morris to join Cozen O’Connor earlier this year.

Throughout her career, Hew has zealously represented clients in intellectual property disputes involving copyright, trademark, trade secret, counterfeiting, patent, unfair competition, and breach of contract claims.

Hew has also counseled and represented various Fortune 500 companies in the consumer products, media, personal care, food and beverage, and fashion industries such as Unilever, Wal-Mart, Meta, Ikea, Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, and Bon Ton Stores on various IP related issues. Hew has worked together on numerous high-profile media cases, including a case of first impression for MP3tunes.com over whether the storage of music in the cloud violated copyrights in certain musical compositions or sound recordings.

“Today’s IP litigation is more demanding than ever — the stakes are higher, and the cases are growing much more complex,” said Michael C. Schmidt, co-managing partner of the New York office. “Adding an IP litigator of Vanessa’s caliber benefits both our corporate clients and our Intellectual Property Practice as a whole. I’m thrilled to welcome Vanessa to the firm and our New York office.”

“Successful IP litigators like Vanessa possess the business acumen needed to size up a multi-district corporate dispute and execute a winning legal strategy that supports the client’s business,” added Kerry B. McTigue, Cozen O’Connor’s co-chair of the Intellectual Property Department. “With an impeccable 20-plus year track record of successful litigation behind her, I’m certain Vanessa will zealously advocate for our clients and provide them with the highest level of representation.”

A speaker at leading IP conferences and seminars — including those sponsored by the New York State Bar Association, Georgetown University Law Center, New York Law School, and the New York City Bar Association — Hew also publishes with Thomson Reuters Practical Law, Thomson Reuters Commercial Litigation in New York State Courts, AmLaw Daily, and the World Trademark Review Yearbook.

“Cozen O’Connor is among the nation’s top-rated and best-known IP firms, especially here in New York City,” Hew said. “I believe my experience with complex IP disputes and transactions matches up well with the firm’s experience, and I hope to contribute to the continued success of the firm’s highly esteemed intellectual property practice.”

Hew earned her J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center and her undergraduate degree from Georgetown University.
