DLA Piper issued the following announcement on Jan. 22.

DLA Piper announced that Kate Brown de Vejar has joined the firm's Litigation practice as a partner in Mexico City and New York. She will also serve as global co-chair of DLA Piper's International Arbitration practice, together with Michael Ostrove in Paris.

Brown de Vejar represents private corporations, sovereign states and state-owned entities in connection with international arbitrations. She focuses her practice on handling complex, high-profile disputes across a wide range of sectors, including aeronautical, construction and engineering, financial services, mining and resources, oil and gas, tax, telecommunications and water treatment. These cases often involve complex issues of civil and mechanical engineering, allegations of delay and disruption, and defective design and construction works.

"Kate brings an impressive and unique background that makes her ideally suited to lead our global International Arbitration practice," said Loren Brown, co-chair of DLA Piper's global and US Litigation practices. "She is highly regarded throughout the international arbitration community, and has received a number of industry accolades, including being appointed to represent her home country of Australia at the meetings of a United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL) working group on arbitration and conciliation."

"The addition of Kate will strengthen the capabilities of our local arbitration practice and allow us to increase our presence in the dispute resolution sector in Mexico," said Gerardo Lozano, who leads the Mexico City office's Arbitration practice and is a highly recognized practitioner in the field.

"I am very much looking forward to working with Kate as global co-chair," Ostrove said. "Kate is a top practitioner with tremendous experience and vision, and she will play a major role in our continued growth around the globe."

Brown de Vejar, who joins from Curtis Mallet-Prevost, Colt & Mosle S.C., received her LL.M. from Harvard Law School and her B.A. and LL.B. from the University of Queensland in Australia.
