David X. Sullivan, the United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, has announced the sentencing of Gavin Hammett, a 60-year-old resident of Bridgeport. Hammett, also known as "G" and "Silk," was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Michael P. Shea in Hartford to 120 months in federal prison followed by five years of supervised release. This sentence is for drug trafficking and firearm possession offenses.
Court documents and statements reveal that in early 2024, the Drug Enforcement Administration's Bridgeport High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Task Force along with the Stamford Police Department identified Hammett as part of a network distributing cocaine and fentanyl in Bridgeport. Between February and April 2024, investigators conducted controlled purchases of fentanyl from him.
Hammett was arrested on May 14, 2024. A court-authorized search of his residence on that day uncovered approximately two kilograms of cocaine, about 39 grams of fentanyl, two handguns, two loaded gun magazines, and an empty gun magazine.
Since his arrest, Hammett has been detained. On February 21, 2025, he pleaded guilty to charges including possession with intent to distribute cocaine and fentanyl and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.
This marks Hammett’s third federal conviction. Previously, he was sentenced in July 1997 in South Carolina to 105 months for distributing cocaine and again in October 2011 in Connecticut to 240 months for distributing cocaine and crack. In October 2020, after serving approximately nine years out of a twenty-year sentence, his motion for compassionate release due to pandemic concerns was granted by a federal judge.
The investigation involved multiple law enforcement agencies including the DEA's Bridgeport HIDTA Task Force, Stamford Police Department, Bridgeport Police Department, U.S. Marshals Service along with assistance from the FBI, Connecticut State Police and police departments from Norwalk, Danbury, Darien among others.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Patricia Stolfi Collins prosecuted this case through the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) Program. More information about OCDETF can be found at https://www.justice.gov/OCDETF.
