Meredith Wilson, a 52-year-old resident of the District, was found guilty by a Superior Court jury on May 14, 2025. The conviction was for felony-enhanced second-degree theft, marking the first such jury trial in over ten years in the District. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro and Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department announced the verdict.
The charge against Wilson includes a mandatory minimum sentence of one year in prison. Sentencing is set for July 15, 2025, as scheduled by Superior Court Judge Andrea Hertzfeld.
Evidence presented during the trial revealed that Wilson stole items valued at over $700 from a Target store located in Columbia Heights on June 27. The stolen goods included jewelry, handbags, and household items.
District of Columbia laws stipulate that individuals with two or more prior theft convictions can face prosecution for felony-enhanced theft if convicted again. This charge comes with a mandatory minimum sentence of one year upon conviction. Wilson's previous guilty pleas to second-degree theft in 2017 and 2018 fulfilled this requirement for her recent conviction.
The Metropolitan Police Department conducted the investigation into Wilson's case. Assistant United States Attorneys Jason B.A. McCullough and Maggie E. Sullivan prosecuted and tried the case.
