A man from Dauphin County has been charged with failing to register as a sex offender, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania. Robert Gene Hiler, Jr., 52, was charged on May 14, 2025. Hiler had been living in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and recently resided in Los Angeles, California.
Acting United States Attorney John C. Gurganus stated that Hiler was required to register as a sex offender due to a prior conviction in Pennsylvania. The indictment alleges that Hiler traveled across state lines and did not fulfill his obligation to register and update his registration under the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act.
The U.S. Marshals Service conducted the investigation into this case, which is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney David C. Williams.
Under federal law, the maximum penalty for this offense is ten years of imprisonment, followed by supervised release and a fine. Sentencing after a guilty verdict will be determined by the Judge based on federal sentencing statutes and guidelines.
It is important to note that indictments and criminal informations are only allegations at this stage. All individuals charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
