The New York Attorney General's Office of Special Investigation (OSI) has initiated an inquiry into the death of a civilian in Brooklyn following an encounter with the New York City Police Department (NYPD). The incident occurred on May 13, 2025.
On that afternoon, NYPD officers responded to a 911 call about a domestic dispute. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found a man wielding a knife. An officer attempted to subdue him using a Taser, but according to reports, the man continued advancing toward them. Subsequently, another officer fired his service weapon, hitting the man. He was then taken to a local hospital where he was declared dead.
Under New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI evaluates each reported case involving potential fatal actions or omissions by police or peace officers. This includes situations whether the officer is on-duty or off-duty and irrespective of whether the deceased was armed or unarmed, in custody or not. If initial assessments suggest an officer may have been responsible for causing death, OSI conducts a comprehensive investigation.
