A Sherman resident has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for a firearms violation, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Abe McGlothin, Jr. Mouaidad Mohamad, aged 30, pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm and was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Sean D. Jordan on May 9, 2025.

The incident leading to the conviction occurred on August 5, 2022. Law enforcement officers responded to reports of shots fired in Sherman and found that Mohamad had fired two shots from a vehicle window before coercing his girlfriend to drive away from the scene. He was later apprehended in the same vehicle. Investigations revealed that Mohamad had previous felony convictions for robbery and burglary of a habitation, which prohibited him from possessing firearms or ammunition under federal law.

This case falls under the Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) Program, aimed at reducing violent crime through collaboration among federal, state, and local authorities. The program emphasizes targeting violent offenders while working with prevention and reentry initiatives.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; Sherman Police Department; and Immigration and Customs Enforcement conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney William R. Tatum prosecuted the case.
