Jerry Tyree, a 46-year-old resident of the District, has been sentenced to 18 and a half years in prison for a shooting incident that occurred on November 29, 2023. The sentencing was announced by U.S. Attorney Edward R. Martin Jr. and Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department.
Tyree was convicted in September 2024 by a D.C. Superior Court jury on several charges including aggravated assault while armed, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, unlawful possession of a firearm with prior conviction, and attempted possession of liquid PCP. After serving his prison term, Tyree will undergo eight years of supervised release.
The incident took place at the intersection of Eastern Avenue NE and Foote Street NE where Tyree met the victim before engaging in a consensual sexual encounter in a nearby building. Accusing the victim of robbery afterward, Tyree shot them once in the genitals with a small silver handgun after they denied his accusation. Following this act, he fled the scene as police were alerted by a neighbor and the victim was taken to hospital for surgery.
Tyree was arrested on December 30, 2023, less than a mile from where the shooting occurred. He was found with the same handgun used in the shooting and several vials containing suspected PCP. His identification as the shooter was confirmed through an identification procedure along with ballistics and DNA evidence linking him to the crime scene.
U.S. Attorney Martin and Chief Smith commended both Metropolitan Police Department investigators and U.S. Attorney’s Office personnel for their work on this case, specifically recognizing Assistant U.S. Attorneys Anthony Cocuzza and Daniel Bromwich for their roles in investigation and prosecution.
