Colorado Supreme Court Chief Justice Monica M. Márquez has appointed Judge Nancy W. Salomone as the next chief judge of the 20th Judicial District, which encompasses Boulder County. Judge Salomone will succeed Judge Ingrid S. Bakke, who announced her retirement effective July 12, 2025.

Judge Bakke has served as a district judge since 2010 and took on the role of chief judge in 2017. She is recognized for her leadership during challenging times, including the COVID-19 pandemic, and for presiding over significant trials in her community.

Judge Salomone joined the district court bench in October 2017. Her legal career includes roles as a partner at Malkinson Salomone, a solo practitioner at her own law office, and a deputy public defender in Denver. Her practice focused mainly on criminal defense, including work with the Colorado Office of the Alternate Defense Counsel. She holds a law degree from the University of Michigan Law School.

Chief Justice Márquez expressed gratitude for Judge Bakke's service: “I am grateful for Chief Judge Bakke’s years of service as chief. She led with integrity through challenging times, including the COVID pandemic, and presided over one of the biggest trials in the history of her community.” Regarding Judge Salomone's appointment, she stated: “I thank incoming Chief Judge Salomone for stepping into this new role. I have great confidence in her leadership and know that she will work hard to serve the 20th Judicial District.”

As chief judge, Salomone will oversee administrative functions such as appointing key court personnel and ensuring efficient court operations.
