A Warwick man has been sentenced to 18 years at the Adult Correctional Institutions following his involvement in a bank robbery and a subsequent crash that injured a father. Attorney General Peter F. Neronha informed that Roy L. Mangum, aged 40, was sentenced by Superior Court Justice Kevin F. McHugh on April 30, 2025. Mangum received a 35-year sentence with 18 years to serve and 35 years of probation. The defendant pleaded nolo contendere to multiple charges, including three counts of first-degree robbery and eluding police during a high-speed chase.
Attorney General Neronha stated, “Unfortunately, this defendant’s actions are not the plotline of some action movie, but rather real-life crimes which demonstrate an utter disregard for both the law and public safety.” He added that Mangum's actions endangered many, including a father of two young children.
The court was ready to prove that on January 5, 2024, Mangum robbed three tellers at a TD Bank in Warwick at gunpoint. Fleeing in a rental truck, he was chased by Warwick Police after being spotted on Warwick Avenue. A high-speed pursuit ensued, reaching over 100 miles per hour until Mangum crashed into a vehicle carrying a father and his children on Post Road. Police recovered a .25 caliber gun and $5057 in cash taken during the robbery.
Warwick Police Chief Bradford Connor remarked, “This defendant acted with reckless disregard for the safety of our community, and I’m glad justice could be served in this case.”
The case was investigated and prosecuted by Special Assistant Attorney General John Malloy and detectives from the Warwick Police Department.
