New York Attorney General Letitia James has publicly released body-worn camera footage from an investigation into the death of Miles Dignean. Dignean died on March 21, 2025, after an incident involving Oswego County Sheriff's Office and New York State Police officers in Oswego County.
On that day, officers responded to a 911 call for a welfare check and sought to serve Dignean with an order of protection at a house in Constantia, Oswego County. During the encounter, a confrontation occurred, during which Dignean allegedly swung a metal object, hitting a NYSP trooper in the head. An OCSO deputy then discharged a service weapon, hitting Dignean, who later died at a local hospital.
The Attorney General's Office of Special Investigation (OSI) has released footage from the body-worn cameras used by officers involved in the incident. This action aligns with Attorney General James’ policy to release such footage to enhance transparency and public trust.
Under New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, the OSI examines situations where an officer's actions may have resulted in a person’s death. This procedure applies whether the officer was on or off duty, and irrespective of the decedent’s custody status or whether they were armed.
The release of this footage is not intended to imply any stance on the guilt or innocence of any individuals or potential criminal charges.
