The Minnesota Supreme Court has officially declared May as Minnesota Treatment Court Month. This month-long observance aims to recognize the impact of treatment courts throughout the state.
The inception of the state's first adult drug court occurred in Hennepin County in 1996. Since then, the treatment court network has expanded to 70 programs. These include Adult Drug, DWI, Veterans, Mental Health, Family Dependency, and Juvenile Drug treatment courts, providing critical support to those dealing with substance use or mental health issues in the legal system.
These courts utilize a cooperative justice approach that focuses on recovery, accountability, and rehabilitation rather than incarceration. The objective is to lower recidivism, promote lasting recovery, and enhance community strength by aiding participants in leading healthier, more productive lives.
During May, the Judicial Branch will recognize the dedication of judges, court staff, prosecutors, public defenders, probation officers, treatment providers, and community advocates who make such efforts possible. This month will also celebrate the resolve and dedication of many Minnesotans whose lives have been transformed by their involvement in a treatment court.
Stories of Treatment Court graduates will be featured on the Minnesota Judicial Branch's Instagram account (@mncourts) throughout May.
