The New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation (OSI) is conducting an investigation into the death of Jumaane Wright. Wright died on April 29, 2025, following an encounter with New York City Police Department (NYPD) officers in Brooklyn.

At around 8:10 p.m. on April 29, NYPD officers encountered Wright on the Belt Parkway near Rockaway Parkway. During this encounter, an officer shot Wright, who was subsequently taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead.

The OSI is acting under New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, which mandates the assessment of incidents where a police or peace officer might have caused a person's death, either through action or inaction. This law applies regardless of whether the officer was on or off duty, and whether the deceased was armed or unarmed, or in custody.

The current information about the incident is preliminary and may change as the investigation proceeds.
