Virginia's Attorney General Jason Miyares recently hosted the eighth annual Unsung Hero Award ceremony in Richmond, acknowledging individuals across the state who have demonstrated exceptional support for crime victims. Highlighting trauma-informed care and victims' rights, these awards recognize the significant contributions of those committed to advocacy, justice, and victim support.

Detective Gennie Bellas from the James City County Police Department and Mary Booker, the director of the Lynchburg Victim Witness Program, were among the recipients, praised for their extensive service and dedication to educational initiatives and community support.

Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Elizabeth Bruzzo was recognized for her work against domestic violence and child-related crimes, securing multiple convictions including significant sentences for offenders. Additional honorees, such as Lieutenant Colonel Seth Dilworth and Captain Kristen Dorfman, were acknowledged for their contributions to victims' rights within military contexts.

Other notable figures honored include retired Detective Phil Giles from the Albemarle Police Department, credited with resolving a longstanding cold case, and Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Richard Farley, noted for his work on violent crime prosecutions.

The event brought together an array of professionals from various fields, all of whom demonstrated a commitment to supporting victims through challenging circumstances. Paige Meade, from the Virginia Department of Corrections Victim Services Unit, was praised for turning personal trauma into a mission of advocacy and education.

These awards underscore the efforts made by individuals to confront crime's impact on victims and to promote healing and justice across Virginia.
