Francisco Ortiz, formerly the chief operating officer at Wedgewood Physicians, Inc., was sentenced to 36 months in federal prison for bank fraud. Ortiz was found to have defrauded the Morgantown medical practice by redirecting over $650,000 for personal use, including spending on travel and home improvements.

Ortiz’s financial misconduct also benefitted James Mersing, a former physician at the practice, who pled guilty to related charges and was sentenced in October 2024. Court documents indicate that Ortiz is required to pay restitution amounting to $692,176.19. Upon completion of his prison term, Ortiz will undergo five years of supervised release.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation led the inquiry into the case. The prosecution was spearheaded by Assistant U.S. Attorney Andrew Cogar, with Chief U.S. District Judge Thomas S. Kleeh overseeing the proceedings.
