A Jacksonville, Florida man has been sentenced by a federal district judge to 405 months in federal prison, a term followed by a lifetime of supervised release, for crimes related to child exploitation. David Wayne Currin Jr., aged 30, had pleaded guilty to charges of producing and transporting visual depictions that involve child sexual abuse material (CSAM) on January 23.
The sentence was announced by U.S. Attorney Hayden P. O’Byrne for the Southern District of Florida and Acting Special Agent in Charge José R. Figueroa of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Miami Field Office.
The case unfolded when Currin arrived at the Miami Seaport from The Bahamas aboard a cruise ship on October 30, 2024. During a Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) inspection, agents from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and HSI Jacksonville found 260 images and 26 videos of CSAM on Currin’s smartphone. The materials included explicit content involving a minor and an infant or toddler. Investigations revealed Currin used his device to record sexually explicit conduct involving a minor between March 2024 and October 30, 2024.
HSI Miami and HSI Jacksonville led the investigation with support from CBP, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Ilana Malkin prosecuted the case.
This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a national initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice, aimed at combating child sexual exploitation and abuse. The initiative, led by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), pools federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals exploiting children via the Internet and to identify and rescue victims.
