A Washington man has been sentenced to federal prison for assaulting two federal officers. Chief United States District Judge Stanley A. Bastian sentenced Filiberto Santana, 34, to 84 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release. Acting United States Attorney Richard R. Barker announced the sentencing.
On April 11, 2025, the Columbia River Drug Task Force asked the United States Marshals Service to help apprehend Santana due to active state arrest warrants. Officers found Santana and a female accomplice in a stolen vehicle at a "Park and Ride" area in Wenatchee, Washington. Santana, with a history of fleeing law enforcement, was in the passenger seat, and both occupants had outstanding arrest warrants.
Law enforcement officers blocked the vehicle to prevent their escape and ordered the occupants to raise their hands. The female driver disobeyed orders, attempting to flee by shifting the vehicle into gear and spinning the tires in the snow. Santana did not comply with commands, and officers broke a window to gain visibility and access. Attempts to subdue the duo with tasers failed because of their thick clothing.
Santana then pointed an object with a pistol grip at the officers. It was identified as a spray bottle which he used, spraying an unknown liquid at the officers. A deputy United States Marshal suffered burning and irritation in his eyes, while another officer experienced respiratory discomfort due to the spray. Both were treated but not hospitalized.
Officers found interior detailing spray in the car, along with stolen items. This included a Ruger handgun, magazines, a holster, and ammunition.
"Everyday law enforcement officers take on tremendous dangers; yet, they put their lives on the line to protect our communities," remarked Acting U.S. Attorney Rich Barker.
W. Mike Herrington, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Seattle field office, praised the law enforcement officers for their courage and professionalism.
U. S. Marshal Craig Thayer emphasized the threats faced by law enforcement and the importance of bringing fugitives to justice.
The FBI and the Columbia River Drug Task Force investigated the case.
