A man from Dubuque, Iowa, received a federal prison sentence after admitting to discharging a firearm in a neighborhood. Datreon Adams, 30, was sentenced to three years on April 8, 2025, for possession of a firearm by a felon, following his guilty plea on September 19, 2024.
During the judicial proceedings, Adams confessed to illegally possessing a firearm. Evidence presented revealed that he discharged the weapon while driving through a Dubuque neighborhood, though no person or property was hit. The firearm was later found in his motel room, where he returned after the incident.
Adams was sentenced by United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand in Cedar Rapids. His sentence includes 36 months in federal prison and a subsequent two-year supervised release period. Federal inmates are not eligible for parole.
This sentencing is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a collaborative effort of law enforcement and communities aimed at reducing gun violence and ensuring neighborhood safety. The Department’s strategy, launched on May 26, 2021, emphasizes building community trust, supporting violence prevention organizations, prioritizing strategic enforcement, and evaluating outcomes.
Currently, Adams remains in the United States Marshal’s custody, awaiting transfer to a federal prison facility.
The prosecution was led by Special Assistant United States Attorney Michael S.A. Hudson and involved the Dubuque Police Department, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
