Each April, the nation pauses to acknowledge and support those affected by crime, reiterating a commitment to justice and healing. This observance, known as National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, was initiated by President Ronald Reagan in 1981 to address the impact of crime.

The theme for this year, “Kinship, Connection & Healing,” highlights the human connections that assist victims in their toughest times and symbolizes the unity and support necessary throughout the legal process and beyond. Attorney General Steve Marshall of Alabama emphasizes the importance of these concepts in serving survivors.

For over two decades, both as a prosecutor and Attorney General, Marshall has witnessed the profound pain crime inflicts, as well as the resilience shown by victims and their families. “It is those individuals, survivors, and their loved ones, who fuel my work and that of the dedicated team in the Attorney General’s Office,” he states.

The Victim Assistance Division in Alabama’s Attorney General’s Office serves those impacted by violent crime. Last year, the division reviewed over 1,400 cases, informed victims of legal proceedings, and protested more than 2,200 parole and pardon requests. The Criminal Appeals Division also managed over 1,000 appeals, maintaining a 95% conviction success rate, while the Capital Litigation Division worked to ensure accountability for serious offenses.

Despite these legal efforts, Marshall notes that justice can be slow, prolonging the needs of victims. In light of this, he is advocating for the Speedy Trial Act in collaboration with Senate Judiciary Chairman Will Barfoot and House Judiciary Chairman Jim Hill. This proposed legislation aims to reduce court delays and ensure timely justice for violent offenders. “Justice delayed is justice denied,” Marshall asserts, expressing the necessity for a system that prioritizes the rights of victims.

Marshall stresses that laws alone are insufficient. The office collaborates with local organizations, including Victims of Crime and Leniency (VOCAL), to support victims and their families. He underscores the importance of fostering a culture that prioritizes victims.

In his message to victims and families, Marshall reassures them, “You are seen. You are heard. And you are not alone.” He affirms that the commitment to victims extends beyond a single week in April and promises daily support.

Steve Marshall is serving as the 48th Attorney General of Alabama.
