Ty’nell D. Jimmerson, aged 20 from Omaha, Nebraska, has been sentenced to 32 months in federal prison for illegal possession of a machine gun. The sentence was delivered by Chief United States District Judge Robert F. Rossiter, Jr. on March 27, 2025. After serving his time, Jimmerson will undergo a supervised release period of three years. There is no parole in the federal system.

The case stems from an incident on July 28, 2024, when Omaha Police observed Jimmerson driving recklessly near 60th and Ames Streets. The vehicle, a Jeep, fled when officers approached, leading to a pursuit by an OPD helicopter, Able-1. Jimmerson was seen abandoning a loaded Glock 21 .45 caliber handgun containing a high-capacity magazine and a 'Glock switch' conversion device in a park. The attachment modifies the gun to function as a fully automatic machine gun. This firearm had been reported stolen earlier during a vehicle break-in.

Following the incident, Jimmerson attempted to escape by entering a Nissan. The police stopped the car on 90th Street and Blair High Road, resulting in his arrest.

This case is a part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative, which collaborates with law enforcement and communities to curb violent crime and enhance neighborhood safety. The initiative includes strategic principles such as reinforcing community trust, backing violence prevention organizations, prioritizing focused law enforcement, and evaluating outcomes.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives alongside the Omaha Police Department conducted the investigation.
