Joshua Timothy Rex admitted guilt to illegally possessing firearms as a felon after law enforcement intercepted him on the Reinhardt University campus. Acting U.S. Attorney Richard S. Moultrie, Jr. expressed relief that local law enforcement intervened before Rex caused harm, thanking the collaborative efforts of federal and local agencies. "Rex is a repeat violent offender who placed the citizens of Cherokee County and the Reinhardt University community at serious risk," Moultrie stated.
Benjamin Gibbons, Special Agent in Charge, emphasized the threat Rex posed and commended the ATF and partners for their resources to protect the community. On July 20, 2024, Rex drove to the campus armed, aiming to confront a student. Law enforcement became aware of Rex's intentions through a 911 call. Officers from Cherokee County Sheriff's Office and Reinhardt University Department of Public Safety arrested him for driving under the influence and possession of firearms on campus. Rex later admitted his intentions to federal agents.
Sentencing is set for July 9, 2025, before Judge Thomas W. Thrash, Jr. The investigation, led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, received assistance from local sheriff and university safety departments. Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Wylly is prosecuting the case.
The case is part of Operation Take Back America, an initiative of the Department of Justice targeting illegal immigration and violent crime. For more information, contact the U.S. Attorney’s Public Affairs Office in Georgia.
