Sonya H. Toma appointed District Family Court Judge for Maui County

Chief Justice Mark E. Recktenwald today announced the appointment of Sonya H. Toma as a judge for the District Family Court of the Second Circuit in Maui County. This appointment fills a current vacancy in the court.

Sonya H. Toma is presently serving as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney for the Maui County Department of the Prosecuting Attorney. Her legal career has seen her working with the Maui County Department of Corporation Counsel and the Family Law Division of the Department of the Attorney General on Maui. Toma has also been involved with the Family Law Self-Help Center of the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada, the State Office of the Public Defender on both Maui and Hawaiʻi Island, as well as maintaining a private law practice.

Toma graduated from the William S. Richardson School of Law and has been a member of the Hawaiʻi State Bar since 2007. Besides her license to practice law in Hawaiʻi, Toma is also licensed in Indiana and Nevada.

Her expertise in family law is one of her standout qualifications. Toma has further contributed to her community by serving as a co-facilitator in the Kids First Hawaiʻi program for the Second Circuit Family Court. She has dedicated time as a volunteer at the Maui Self-Help Center and through the Maui office of Volunteer Legal Services Hawaiʻi.
