An Ellsworth woman has been sentenced in U.S. District Court for the theft of public funds from the Cherryfield Post Office. On March 27, 2025, Judge John A. Woodcock Jr. sentenced Melissa Milliken, aged 33, to three years of probation. She has also been ordered to pay restitution amounting to $17,130.22.

The investigation, headed by the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General (USPS-OIG), began in October 2022 after reports of missing postal funds following cash and stamp stock counts. Surveillance footage from the Cherryfield Post Office revealed Milliken placing money into her pockets. During the investigation, she confessed to stealing from the post office for about a year. It was determined that she took more than $17,130 of government money between December 2021 and September 2023.

The USPS-OIG Northeast Area Field Office, led by Special Agent in Charge Matthew Modafferi, conducted the investigation.
