New York Attorney General Letitia James has issued a consumer alert directed at customers of 23andMe, a genetic testing company. The alert comes in response to the company's recent bankruptcy filing and plans to sell its assets. Attorney General James emphasized the importance of protecting personal genetic data, which is highly sensitive.
“New Yorkers’ genetic data is sensitive information that must be protected at all costs,” stated Attorney General James. She urged consumers to take action by following instructions from her office to delete their data or destroy any DNA samples held by 23andMe. She also advised anyone facing difficulties in deleting their information to contact her office for assistance.
The Attorney General provided steps for consumers who wish to delete their account and personal information stored with 23andMe:
1. Log into your 23andMe account on their website.
2. Navigate to the “Settings” section of your profile.
3. Scroll down to find “23andMe Data.”
4. Click “View” next to “23andMe Data.”
5. Download your data if desired before proceeding.
6. Scroll further down and select “Permanently Delete Data.”
7. Confirm the request through an email link sent by 23andMe.
Additionally, users can change preferences regarding stored saliva samples and withdraw consent previously given for research purposes via the account settings page under "Preferences" and "Research and Product Consents," respectively.
Attorney General James encourages New Yorkers experiencing issues with this process to file a complaint online with her office.
