Gabriel Lee Rice, a 36-year-old resident of Winnebago, Nebraska, was sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for assault resulting in substantial bodily injury to a spouse or intimate or dating partner. The sentencing took place on March 20, 2025, in Omaha, Nebraska. United States District Court Judge Brian C. Buescher presided over the case.

Acting United States Attorney Matt R. Molsen confirmed the details of the sentencing and stated that there is no parole in the federal system. Following his imprisonment, Rice will be subject to a three-year term of supervised release.

The incident occurred in July 2022 when Rice assaulted a woman known to him by pinning her against a wall and covering her mouth and nose with his hand. This action restricted the victim's breathing to the extent that she lost consciousness. The assault took place in front of a child.

The case was prosecuted at the federal level because it was classified as a felony offense occurring on the Winnebago Indian Reservation in Nebraska. The Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation into this matter.
