The U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights (OCR) has initiated investigations into alleged Title IX violations by the Illinois Department of Education, Chicago Public Schools District 299, and Deerfield Public Schools District 109. These actions are in response to complaints that accuse these institutions of illegal discrimination against women and girls.

Title IX prohibits sex-based discrimination in educational programs or activities, ensuring privacy and safety in settings like locker rooms. The investigations stem from complaints filed by the Defense of Freedom Institute and Liberty Justice Center. The allegations include claims that school administrators pressured female students to share intimate spaces with a biological male student, actions deemed inconsistent with Title IX's intent.

The Department's decision underscores its commitment to enforcing Title IX as intended by Congress: protecting students from sex-based discrimination while providing separate facilities for males and females where necessary. This approach aims to balance individual rights with privacy and safety concerns for all students.

Jacob Huebert, President of Liberty Justice Center, stated, "We are pleased that the Department has acted swiftly on our complaint. We look forward to seeing the state and these districts held accountable for their illegal discrimination."
