The New York Attorney General's Office of Special Investigation (OSI) has initiated an investigation into the death of a civilian following a motor vehicle accident involving an off-duty Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) police officer. The incident occurred on March 15, 2025, in Suffolk County.

According to reports, the accident took place shortly after midnight when the off-duty MTA officer was driving his personal vehicle on Route 110 and Francine Avenue in North Amityville. The officer struck a man who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Under New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI is responsible for assessing incidents where a police or peace officer may have caused a person's death through action or inaction. This law applies regardless of whether the officer was on duty or off duty and irrespective of whether the deceased was armed, unarmed, in custody, or incarcerated. If OSI's assessment suggests that an officer may have been responsible for the death, a full investigation is conducted.

These details are preliminary and may be subject to change.
