A Montgomery County man, Jared Wyllie, has been sentenced to three to six years in state prison and two years of probation for failing to complete home improvement work, causing victims a total loss of over $156,000. Attorney General Dave Sunday announced the sentence handed down by a Montgomery County judge, which includes restitution payments to the victims.
Between 2021 and 2022, Wyllie operated under the business name PROjex, LLC. He entered into contracts with four homeowners, taking advance payments while using another contractor’s license information without permission. The investigation revealed that Wyllie was not a licensed or registered home improvement contractor.
Several victims testified in court. One homeowner paid more than $100,000 for incomplete repairs and had to sell their home at a loss due to Wyllie's failure to finish the work. Another victim contracted with Wyllie for roof repair and water damage restoration for $27,900.10 but received substandard work requiring multiple corrections. Despite paying an additional $4,240 for roof supplies, only a plastic tarp was placed on the roof.
One victim paid over $39,000 upfront; materials were delivered and some work began but remained unfinished. Another homeowner paid $108,747 for demolition and remodeling that were never completed as agreed upon. This led them to sell their home at a loss since they could not afford further renovations.
Attorney General Sunday emphasized the importance of researching contractors before signing contracts or making payments: “A person’s home is their castle... My office frequently investigates home improvement contractors who take payments but fail to complete jobs.”
The case was prosecuted by Senior Deputy Attorney General Thomas Ost-Prisco.
