Jerald Allen Hjelmstad, aged 71, passed away on February 8, 2025, in Bismarck, North Dakota. His death was due to complications from Parkinson’s disease.

A memorial service for Mr. Hjelmstad will take place on Friday, March 28, 2025, at House of Prayer Lutheran Church in Bismarck. Visitation is scheduled for the evening of Thursday, March 27.

Born on September 16, 1953, in Glenburn, North Dakota to Arnold and Tilda Hjelmstad, Jerry was the youngest of four children. He graduated from Glenburn High School in 1971 and pursued higher education at Minot State University and later the University of North Dakota School of Law.

In his personal life, Jerry married Laura Mayo on April 4th, 1981. The couple moved to Bismarck where they raised three children: Doug, Eric, and Amy.

Professionally, Jerry served as a staff attorney with the North Dakota League of Cities for over three decades until health issues led to early retirement in 2015.

Jerry was known for his love of Minnesota sports teams like the Vikings and Twins. He enjoyed games such as Scrabble and checkers and had a fondness for sweets like jelly beans. His humor and puns were well-known among family and friends.

He is survived by his wife Laura; children Douglas Clark (Desiree), Eric Hjelmstad (Kristen), and Amy Hjelmstad (David); siblings Meredith Henry, Terry Hjelmstad, Janet Rogers; along with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
