A federal grand jury in Honolulu has indicted Navor Salas Cruz, a 52-year-old Mexican national, for illegal reentry into the United States. Acting United States Attorney Kenneth M. Sorenson announced the indictment, which charges Salas Cruz with being present in the U.S. after a prior felony conviction and removal.
The criminal complaint reveals that Salas Cruz has been deported to Mexico at least six times and has three felony convictions for illegal reentry. In 2018, he was convicted in Hawaii for illegal reentry and possession of firearms and ammunition as a felon, resulting in a 30-month federal prison sentence. After completing his sentence, he was deported to Mexico in March 2020 but later returned illegally and was arrested on Kauai in February 2025.
If found guilty of the current charge, Salas Cruz could face up to ten years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. The indictment remains an accusation; Salas Cruz is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
In case of conviction, sentencing would be determined by a U.S. District Judge based on statutory factors and advisory guidelines.
Homeland Security Investigations is leading the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Darren W.K. Ching handling prosecution duties.
