United States Attorney David Metcalf has announced the arrest and indictment of Tyheem Tyler, a 34-year-old resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Tyler faces charges of conspiracy to commit kidnapping, kidnapping resulting in death, and aiding and abetting.
The indictment claims that on March 6, 2023, Tyler participated in an armed robbery at Wey Um's business location in Philadelphia. Later that month, on March 31, it is alleged that Tyler and his accomplices kidnapped Wey Um from outside his home using a Ford Explorer SUV. They reportedly transported him to a site near the Delaware River.
According to the allegations, Tyler "knowingly, willfully, and unlawfully seized" Wey Um for ransom or reward purposes. This act allegedly resulted in Wey Um's death. The crime reportedly involved the use of interstate commerce facilities.
If found guilty, Tyler could face life imprisonment or even the death penalty.
The investigation was conducted by the FBI Violent Crimes Task Force alongside the Philadelphia Police Department. Assistant United States Attorneys Everett Witherell and Timothy Lanni are handling the prosecution.
It is important to note that an indictment is merely an accusation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
