Marcus Fair, a 28-year-old from Dolton, Illinois, has been sentenced to 57 months in federal prison for possessing a firearm illegally. The sentencing occurred on March 12, 2025, and was presided over by United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand.
The case originated from an incident on September 21, 2022, when law enforcement responded to a domestic disturbance and animal cruelty report in Humboldt, Iowa. During the investigation, officers discovered a discarded backpack containing items belonging to Fair. Among these were a loaded Taurus G3C 9mm pistol with an obliterated serial number, an extended magazine, and marijuana. As Fair was using marijuana at the time, he was prohibited from possessing firearms.
Fair will serve his sentence followed by a three-year supervised release term without the possibility of parole. He remains in custody of the United States Marshal Service until his transfer to a federal prison.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative under the Department of Justice aimed at reducing violent crime through evidence-based strategies. PSN brings together various stakeholders to address pressing violent crime issues and focuses on enforcing actions against violent offenders while supporting prevention and reentry programs for sustained crime reduction.
