A vacancy has been announced in the office of Elective Judicial Nominating Commissioner for Judicial Election District 1B. A special election is scheduled to take place from April 16, 2025, until May 9, 2025, to fill this position and complete the current term ending on January 31, 2026. According to Iowa Code § 46.5(3), individuals interested in serving on a District Judicial Nominating Commission are not required to be attorneys but must meet specific legal criteria.

Candidates aiming to have their names placed on the ballot need to submit a completed nominating petition by Monday, April 14, 2025. The petition must include signatures from at least ten eligible electors within the candidate's judicial district.

Instructions for obtaining and submitting a nominating petition can be found through the appropriate channels. The State Court Administrator will oversee the election process, with voting open to eligible attorneys as per Iowa Code Chapter 46. Voting will commence on April 16, 2025.

The winner of the election will be notified accordingly. Election results will be reported to both the Governor and General Assembly and published on the judicial branch website.

For those interested in becoming a member of a District Judicial Nominating Commission or seeking more information about the nomination and selection process, it is advised to review Article V, sections 15 and 16 of the Iowa Constitution along with Iowa Code Chapter 46.
