Charles Ray Mackey, a 43-year-old resident of Parkersburg, West Virginia, has been sentenced to four years in prison for being a felon in possession of a firearm. This will be followed by three years of supervised release.
Court documents reveal that on November 16, 2023, law enforcement officers stopped Mackey's vehicle in Parkersburg. A search led to the discovery of a German Sports Guns model Firefly .22-caliber semiautomatic handgun.
Mackey was aware that his prior felony convictions barred him from possessing firearms. His criminal record includes convictions for non-aggravated robbery, assault during the commission of a felony upon an elderly person, and conspiracy to commit non-aggravated robbery in Wood County Circuit Court on June 12, 2001. Additional offenses include breaking and entering, escape, domestic battery, fleeing, and obstruction.
Acting United States Attorney Lisa G. Johnston praised the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Parkersburg Police Department for their investigative efforts.
The sentence was handed down by United States District Judge Thomas E. Johnston. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Lesley C. Shamblin with former Assistant United States Attorney Bill Longwell also involved.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through community collaboration. On May 26, 2021, the Department launched a strategy to enhance PSN focusing on trust-building within communities and strategic enforcement priorities.
