Brett Curtis Hair, a 22-year-old resident of Bakersfield, was taken into custody for allegedly directing a laser pointer at an aircraft. The arrest was announced by Acting U.S. Attorney Michele Beckwith.

The indictment states that on September 11, 2024, Hair aimed the laser beam at a helicopter belonging to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, known as Air One.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has highlighted the dangers associated with laser exposure to pilots, which can lead to visual impairment and jeopardize aircraft safety. In 2024 alone, there were 12,840 reported incidents of laser strikes from pilots across the country.

This case is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in collaboration with the Kern County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Karen Escobar is handling the prosecution.

If found guilty, Hair could face up to five years in prison and a fine of $250,000. Sentencing will be decided by the court based on statutory factors and Federal Sentencing Guidelines. It is important to note that this charge remains an allegation until proven otherwise beyond a reasonable doubt.
