A woman from Clinton, Indiana, Davetta Cox, has pleaded guilty to charges related to a murder-for-hire scheme. The plea was entered on March 7, 2025, at the U.S. Courthouse in Urbana, Illinois. Sentencing is scheduled for July 18, 2025.
During the court hearing overseen by U.S. Magistrate Judge Eric I. Long, Cox admitted to attempting to hire an individual she believed to be a hitman. She reportedly offered $6,000 for the murder of another person.
Cox was apprehended in January 2024 and is currently held by the United States Marshals Service until her sentencing. She could face up to 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $500,000, and a supervised release term of up to six years.
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Springfield Field Office and Champaign Resident Agency alongside the Illinois State Police. Assistant U.S. Attorney Rachel Ritzer is handling the prosecution.
