A Kansasville, Wisconsin man has been sentenced to prison for assaulting a Department of Natural Resources (DNR) warden. The Wisconsin Department of Justice announced that Forest County Circuit Court Judge Leon D. Stenz sentenced Mark A. Szczerba II, aged 43, to four and a half years of initial confinement followed by four and a half years of extended supervision. This sentence follows Szczerba's guilty plea to charges of battery to a law enforcement officer and attempted battery to a law enforcement officer.
The incident occurred on July 15, 2022, when Szczerba attacked the DNR warden after they had pulled over his daughter for speeding in a utility terrain vehicle in the Town of Lincoln, Wisconsin. During the attack, the warden feared for their life and discharged their weapon, striking Szczerba. The Forest County District Attorney later cleared the warden of any criminal charges related to this action in November 2022.
The investigation was led by the Division of Criminal Investigation within the DOJ. The case was prosecuted by the Forest County District Attorney’s Office with assistance from Assistant Attorney General Adrienne Blais.
