Attorney General Gentner Drummond has issued a warning to Oklahoma residents about the potential for contractor fraud following severe weather events. Drummond noted that incidents of contractor fraud tend to increase in the aftermath of storms and tornadoes.

"In the wake of disaster, these bad actors often target vulnerable homeowners desperate to rebuild," Drummond stated. "While the urge to quickly repair storm damage is understandable, taking time to carefully select a reputable contractor is crucial to protecting yourself and your property."

The Consumer Protection Unit at the Attorney General’s Office provided several tips for avoiding contractor scams. They recommend asking for referrals from trusted sources who have recent experience with home repairs, obtaining multiple written estimates from different contractors, and verifying the contractor's local credentials and community standing.

They also advise caution with contractors demanding large upfront payments or insisting on cash transactions. Homeowners should be wary of high-pressure sales tactics, unsolicited offers, or contractors who appear uninvited. It is important to research thoroughly before signing any agreement or contract.

As this week coincides with National Consumer Protection Week, the Attorney General's Office urges Oklahomans to remain vigilant and informed about their consumer rights during challenging times.

Residents can contact the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Unit at 1-833-681-1895 for information on complaints filed against contractors or to file a complaint themselves.
