Jamari Tyrek Ishman, a 24-year-old from Wilmington, North Carolina, has been sentenced to 46 months in prison for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. Ishman entered a guilty plea on November 20, 2024.
The case against Ishman began when the Edenton Police Department stopped him on March 16, 2024, due to an expired registration. During the stop, officers detected marijuana and observed an open wine bottle in the vehicle. A juvenile was also present as a passenger. The officer noticed a red bandana in Ishman's back pocket, suggesting his affiliation with the Bloods street gang. Upon searching Ishman, police found a firearm magazine in his pants pocket. Although he initially denied having a gun that matched the magazine, he later admitted there was one under the seat. A search of the vehicle revealed a 9mm handgun with an extended magazine and a small amount of marijuana.
Ishman's criminal history includes previous felony convictions for assault inflicting serious bodily injury on a detention employee in 2021 and multiple breaking and entering offenses in 2019.
This conviction is part of the Violent Crime Action Plan (VCAP), which involves collaboration between local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to address violent crime drivers through strategic enforcement and intelligence-led policing.
The announcement was made by Daniel P. Bubar, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina after sentencing by Chief U.S. District Judge Richard E. Myers II. The investigation involved both the Edenton Police Department and the Department of Homeland Security with Assistant U.S. Attorney Kimberly Dixon prosecuting.
