A Montgomery man has been sentenced to over nine years in prison for the armed robbery of a U.S. Postal carrier, according to an announcement by U.S. Attorney Prim F. Escalona and U.S. Postal Inspection Service Acting Inspector-in-Charge Mona Hernandez from the Houston Division.
Anthony Darryl Barber, Jr., 24, received a sentence of 109 months from U.S. District Court Judge Corey L. Maze. Barber had pleaded guilty in October 2024 to charges of robbing a U.S. Postal carrier and using or carrying a firearm during a violent crime.
The plea agreement details that on May 3, 2023, Barber approached a postal carrier delivering mail at an apartment complex in Huntsville. He brandished a gun and took the arrow key used by postal carriers to access mailboxes before fleeing the scene.
A Morgan County Sheriff's Office sergeant, who was patrolling nearby, was alerted about a stolen car tag on a white Nissan Altima, reported stolen in Montgomery on April 30, 2023. The sergeant stopped the vehicle driven by Barber but when asked to pull into a driveway, Barber sped away leading to a high-speed chase. The pursuit concluded with Barber stopping and exiting the vehicle upon command from the officer.
Upon searching Barber, authorities found a Glock 27, Gen 5 .40 caliber pistol in his pants pocket. A further search of the vehicle uncovered a beige ski mask and the postal arrow key.
The case was investigated by USPIS along with the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Davis Barlow.
