A Guatemalan man has been sentenced to one year in federal prison for illegally re-entering the United States after being deported. Adan Gomez-Juarez, 25, from Sioux City, Iowa, pleaded guilty on October 24, 2024, to one count of illegal re-entry.

During the plea hearing, Gomez-Juarez admitted to returning to the United States unlawfully after his removal in 2020. He was discovered by ICE officers in Sioux City on August 28, 2024, following an arrest for operating while intoxicated (OWI) by local police.

United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand sentenced Gomez-Juarez in Sioux City. In addition to his 12-month imprisonment, he will serve a three-year term of supervised release post-incarceration. It is noted that there is no parole in the federal system.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kevin Fletcher and investigated by the Enforcement and Removal Office of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Bureau.
